We spent the morning wandering through the Marais District, peaking into beautiful courtyards, walking through the Jewish quarter and enjoying a picnic at the Place des Vosges.  After some free time, we met in the early evening at the Louvre.  One cannot imagine the sheer size of the Louvre unless you've been there, and even then it is hard to believe. Covering over 652,000 square feet with more than 35,000 pieces displayed at one time, it is completely overwhelming. Luckily we had our own, wonderful, personal tour guide that made sure we saw the "must see" highlights  and helped us decide where we might want to spend any extra time. The Mona Lisa: of course it is a must see, but it was much more entertaining to watch all of the people crowd around this quite small painting and the guards chiding people for taking flash pictures. You get a bit of a feeling of what some of the stars are dealing with when they are surrounded by papparazzi!

THE MARAIS DISTRICT

THE LOUVRE & NAPOLEON III APARTMENTS

The Louvre was open late the night we visited, so Jessica and I chose to spend a few more hours there.  We went through the Napoleon III apartments. After visiting Versailles the next day, we looked back to our visit to the Napoleon III apartments and thought “did they not learn anything?”  It was surprising to us, after such a revolution, that leaders would continue to live in such extravagance.  We really enjoyed this part of the museum and learned a lot of history.
